Roads funding is only papering over the cracks

Surrey Country Council Leader Dr Andrew Povey has described the country wide budget announcement of an extra £100 million funding for road repairs nationally will only allow councils to “paper over the cracks”.
He welcomed the emergency funds, Dr Povey stressed that at least £200 million is needed in Surrey alone to get its roads into a good enough condition.

Council freezes Council Tax & 30% energy cut

A freeze in the local share of council tax for the coming year (for more details see this article). When combined with a 2.5% increase in Surrey County Council’s share of the council tax, and a 2.4% increase in Surrey Police’s share, this gives an increase of 2.3% for the coming year in the combined bill.

Residents save on energy bills with energy monitor lending scheme

More than 400 residents have taken advantage of a Surrey County Council scheme designed to help save up to £150 each year on energy bills. The energy monitor lending scheme has proved most popular in Reigate and Banstead, with 64 individuals and families borrowing the devices from one of the borough’s six libraries during October and November.

Earlswood residents ars being asked to help Surrey County Council’s trading standards team in the fight against scam mail by making February Scamnesty month.
Between 1 and 26 February 2010 there will be Scamnesty bins at the Redhill Library for residents to dump their scam mail.

Glass recycling can now all goes in one bin

Residents will now no longer need to separate their coloured glass bottles and jars for recycling because new technology.

New optical sorting technology at the plant were the Council sends its glass for recycling now allows glass to be colour separated automatically ready to be turned into new glass products. This change means that all glass recycling bins at bring sites across the borough will be able to take glass bottles and jars of any colour.
